Description

Icon with Saint Raphael on Naturally Aged Wood

A great serigraph on naturally aged wood with Saint Raphael. The Saint stands at the center of this icon and he is surrounded by other six saints. These are Saint Andrew, Saint Eustratios, Saint Philip, Saint Savvas from Vatopedi, Saint Mardarios and Saint Philoumenos. According to Orthodox tradition Raphael suffered martyrdom by the Turks on the island of Lesvos on Bright Tuesday (April 9, 1463), after the fall of Constantinople.

He was born on the island of Ithaka around 1410 and he was raised by pious parents. His baptismal name was George, but he was named Raphael when he became a monk. He was ordained to the holy priesthood and later attained the offices of Archimandrite and Chancellor. After many years he became the Abbot of Karyes near the village of Thermi on the island of Lesvos. In the spring of 1463, the Turks raided the monastery and captured the monks. They were tortured from Holy Thursday until Bright Tuesday. Saint Raphael was tied to a tree, and the ferocious Turks sawed through his jaw, killing him.

Blessed Wood that Came out of Paradise

This naturally aged wood that was used at the icon with the representation of Saint Raphael came from a renovated cell from Mount Athos which has suffered many damages through years. Renovation works were necessary to remain in good condition so monks can continue to live there. Monks are replacing doors, window shutters or ceiling beams but they are keeping the pieces of wood so they can reuse them. They are cutting and processing the wood with excellent techniques so they can use it later for their artworks such as these icons. These pieces of wood are part of the history of Mount Athos. So monks reuse them and they are giving us a small piece of this history.
