Description

Saint Seraphim of Sarov born Prokhor Moshnin, is one of the most renowned Russian monks and mystics in the Eastern and Greek Orthodox Church. He is generally considered the greatest of the 19th century startsy (elders). Seraphim extended the monastic teachings of contemplation, theoria and self-denial to the layperson. He taught that the purpose of the Christian life was to acquire the Holy Spirit. Perhaps his most popular quotation amongst Orthodox believers is “Acquire a peaceful spirit, and thousands around you will be saved.”

Seraphim was glorified (canonized) by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1903. His biographer Nicholas Motovilov was one of his “spiritual children”. Pope John Paul II referred to him as a saint. The lithographic icon of the Saint has been placed by the monks who live at the Holy Hut of St. George on Mount Athos, in a wood derivative, which has been worked with wax and resin. By applying high temperature, the wood took this particular shape and its distinctive black color.

This unique work of Byzantine art has been coated with gloss varnish in order to remain unchanged over time.
