Description

Saints Raphael, Nicholas and Irene belong to the chorus of the Newly-Revealed Saints and more specifically to those who martyred almost immediately after the fall of Constantinople. With regards to their life very little is known. But there are plenty of references and records of their miracles. They all suffered from an agonizing death. The twelve-year-old Irene had been tortured, and then burned alive in a large earthenware jar in the presence of her parents. On Tuesday of Renewal Week, Saint Raphael had been tied to a tree and his head sawn off through his jaws; Saint Nicholas had died at the sight of this.

The hagiography of Saints Raphael, Nicholas and Irene is crafted on carved wood and is finished by hand in the workshop of father Pefkis, former student of the Athonite Academy. Father Peukis serves the Byzantine art as it was taught to him on Mount Athos.
