Description

Serigraph with Saints Spyridon & Charalambos on Naturally Aged Wood

This is a beautiful serigraph with two of the most important figures of Orthodox Church. Saint Spyridon was born in 270 AD, in Cyprus from a wealthy family of shepherds. He worked as a shepherd, he got married and had one daughter, Irene but after the death of his wife, Spyridon entered a monastery. He became Bishop of Trimythous and he took part in the first Ecumenical council and the miracles he has done are infinite. He is the Protector of Corfu, where his relics are kept.

Saint Charalambos was a Christian priest in Magnesia, a region of Asia Minor. He lived during the reign of Septimius Severus (193–211), when Lucian was Proconsul of Magnesia. It is believed that at the time of his martyrdom in 202, Charalambos was 113 years old. When the news of his preaching reached the authorities of the area, the proconsul Lucian and military commander Lucius, the saint was arrested and brought to trial, where he confessed his faith in Christ. Despite his advanced age, he was tortured mercilessly. It is said that the Saint gave up his soul to God even before the executioner had laid his sword to his neck.

Blessed Wood that Came out of Paradise

The naturally aged wood of this icon came from a renovated cell from Mount Athos which has suffered many damages through years. Renovation works were necessary to remain in good condition so monks can continue to live there. Monks are replacing doors, window shutters or ceiling beams but they are keeping the pieces of wood so they can reuse them. They are cutting and processing the wood with excellent techniques so they can use it later for their artworks such as these icons. These pieces of wood are part of the history of Mount Athos. So monks reuse them and they are giving us a small piece of this history.
