The Root of Jesse or the Tree of Jesse is an iconographic depiction of the Ancestors of Christ. It shows in a tree which rises from Jesse of Bethlehem, the father of King David; the original use of the family tree as a schematic representation of a genealogy. It originates in a passage in the Biblical Book of Isaiah which describes metaphorically the descent of the Messiah, and is accepted by Orthodoxy as referring to Jesus Christ.

The Root of Jesse – Antique Painting Technique from Mount Athos
Discover a unique artwork depicting the Root of Jesse which has been crafted by the well known Greek hagiographer father Pefkis. It stands out with its antique style, the handmade details and its vivid colors.
The composition of the icon has been particularly well studied, even to its tiniest details. Everything, from the shape of the tree, to the proportion of the colors, contains a deeper meaning and obeys the strict rules of the Byzantine iconography. The visual depiction of the apocryphal text acquires a unique and symbolic character.
Hagiographer Father Pefkis, applies the knowledge he acquired while studying at the Athonite Ecclesiastical Academy of Mount Athos next to well known iconographers. The icon of the Hospitality of Abraham has been hand finished on natural wood while the background is adorned with ormolu leaves.
The Root of Jesse – Composition
The creator of the synthesis, Father Pefkis, by faithfully following the technique of icon painting and artificial aging as it was taught to him on Mount Athos created the handmade details of this multicolored hagiography.
