This is a great icon with the representation of Virgin Mary Glykofilousa on naturally aged wood from Mount Athos. This wood came from a renovated cell at Mount Athos. Every part of this cell is connected with the monks who lived there and carries within blessings and prayers from many years ago.

As this icon is handmade and the wood processing is made exclusively by hand there might be small differences at the wood but not on the representation

Description

Icon with Virgin Mary Glykofilousa on Naturally Aged Wood

This icon has the representation of Virgin Mary Sweet Kissing (Glykofilousa) which is always close to the face of her child. We can see that Christ is nesting inside her arms and His look turns to Virgin Mary while She turns her look to Jesus. The original icon of Virgin Mary Glykofilousa was the property of Victoria, wife of the eikonomachos senator Symeon, who, in order to save it threw it into the sea.

The icon, floating upright on the waves, reached the arsanas of the Monastery of Philotheou, where it was received with great honour and rejoicing by the Abbot and fathers of the Monastery, who had been warned of its advent by a revelation of the Theotokos. At the point on the shore where they placed the icon, holy water gushed out. Virgin Mary is Known by many different epithets that has been given to Her through the history of Orthodox Church. One of these names is Glykofilousa which means Sweet Kissing.

Blessed Wood that Came out of Paradise

This naturally aged wood that was used at the icon of Virgin Mary came from a renovated cell from Mount Athos which has suffered many damages through years. Renovation works were necessary to remain in good condition so monks can continue to live there. Monks are replacing doors, window shutters or ceiling beams but they are keeping the pieces of wood so they can reuse them. They are cutting and processing the wood with excellent techniques so they can use it later for their artworks such as these icons. These pieces of wood are part of the history of Mount Athos. So monks reuse them and they are giving us a small piece of this history.

As this icon is handmade and the wood processing is made exclusively by hand there might be small differences at the wood but not on the representation
