Mountain Tea has a great number of benefits and it can be an ally for good health. It is collected by the monks of the Holy Hut of Saint Nicholas at Holy Monastery of Iviron who knows all its beneficial properties. This herb have anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-spasmodic properties and is rich in natural antioxidants, including flavonoids, and it contain essential oils. This special tea is historically known as «Shepherd’s Tea» because Greek shepherds used to make a brewed tea out of the plants while directing their flocks on the hillsides.

The herb was well known to ancient Greeks, particularly to the pharmacologist – botanist Dioscurides, philosopher Theophrastus and to the father of modern medicine Hippocrates. Back then it was used as a tonic herb, commonly used to treat wounds especially those from iron swords or arrows. Nowadays is used for common cold and has a wide range of health benefits.

Mountain Tea: Properties

One of the main reasons of ironwort’s popularity is that it’s a naturally caffeine-free herbal tea and has a wide range of health benefits. It is considered as a remedy for colds, aches, allergies, indigestion, respiratory issues and a boost for the immune system. Also mountain tea has flavonoids and antioxidants and it lowers blood pressure. Sideritis has anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antispasmodic properties. This herb is also shown to have antiviral and antifungal qualities. It also helps you prevent or fight flu symptoms and stress-related ailments such as chest infections, a foggy head, digestive complaints, fatigue and anxiety.

Preparation

Add a tablespoon of the herb in a pot and then put inside boiled water. Leave it for about five – ten minutes and then strain it. If you want to add a bit of sweetness to your tea, try adding a small spoonful of honey.
