Virgin Mary Axion Esti
The font of the icon is adorned with 22 carat gold leaf and is polished so as for its radiance to be maintained throughout the years.
The treasured icon of the Protaton is presented in a genuine, handmade copy of the icon. The original one can be found in the altar of the church on Mount Athos. Her name is based upon the hymn “Axion Estin”, the Magnificat that the Church chants after the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.
Virgin Mary is gently holding the infant and softly placing her head on the face of baby Christ. With affectionate tenderness and devotion She is placing her head on His, but at the same time She has a profound sadness in Her look because she is already aware of the future Passion of Christ. Virgin Mary wears on her upper half of her clothing, a deep purple tunic and a red maphorion with golden edges and fringes, while Christ is wearing a light colored tunic that has been crafted with remarkable skill.
The font of the icon is adorned with 22 carat gold leaf and is polished so as for its radiance to be maintained throughout the years. The delicacy, accuracy, line of courtesy, grace of colors and the dignity of the artistic expression are all present in the synthesis of this remarkable and unique piece of art, completely handmade by a hagiographer monk from the Holy Monastery of Xenophontos on Mount Athos. It is a unique work of Byzantine art which has been created according to the techniques of the Macedonian School of Art on Mt Athos.
