A lithography with Virgin Mary Egkymonoysa

The Virgin Mary Egkymonoysa (Pregnant) is one of the rarest iconographic themes, although it has been known in Byzantine art since the 11th century. At that time, the model of Virgin Mary Vlachernitissa prevailed in Byzantine iconography. This image depicts Jesus in a medal on the chest of the Virgin Mary to show the Divine Word in her womb.

The depiction of Virgin Mary Egkymonoysa in an icon is very rare. Although the Church attaches great importance to motherhood through its feasts (celebration of the arrest of St. Anne, the birthday of the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist) the Pregnant Virgin Mary, as a model, is not very widespread in the art of iconography. This icon shows Virgin Mary in a state of pregnancy. The Virgin Mary Egkymonoysa (Pregnant) is the protector of childless couples and pregnant women. Our Church honors Virgin Mary Egkymonoysa on September 25, exactly six months after the Annunciation and three months before Christmas.
