Description

Hagiography with Gold depicting Virgin Mary Eleousa

In well polished and gilded wood the bust of Virgin Mary is depicted. With her right hand she is holding Christ, who is blessing his mother with his right hand, while holding a scroll with his left one.

The art of the Byzantine icon, as well as the technique with the large almond-shaped eyes, the sharp nose, the long fingers and the individual components testify meticulous copying of the old standards by the iconographers-monks who live in the region of Saint Basil on Mount Athos. On the right and left side of the two archangels there is the inscription «ΜΡ ΘΥ» and on the bottom and left side of the icon it is written with capital Greek letters «Η ΕΛΕΟΥΣΑ». Virgin Mary while gazing at the viewer is tilting her head slightly to her son. The whole presentation has a symbolic meaning since it heralds the Passion of Jesus.

A unique artwork that has been worked entirely by hand!

The artwork has been worked entirely by hand with egg and powder colors. It manages to maintain the luster of its gold and colors as it is coated with pure beeswax. This unique work of Byzantine art is readily available from Mount Athos Products Exhibition.
