The masterful icon of the enthroned Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus reiterates an iconographic type known as “Our Lady of the Angels”, popular subject matter in the Cretan icons from the 15th century onwards. It owes its name to the addition of the two angels, Michael and Gabriel, in bust and three-quarter pose, who are depicted kneeling in front of Theotokos.
The throne with its western expression carries a wide and tall backrest that is colored ochre and in the same tone with the clothing of Christ, emphasizing the red maphorion of Virgin Mary. The original work dates back to the 17th century, probably in its first half. Holder of the original work of art is the Ecclesiastical Art Museum of Alexandroupoli.
It is produced with the opti plex technique (combination of photographic printing and acrylic glass). It is offered in an excellent packaging accompanied by a description of the artwork by the associate professor of Byzantine art and archeology, Semoglou Athanasius. On the back side of this unique piece of art the authentication hologram can be found.
