Antique Serigraph with Virgin Mary Glykofilousa

An antique serigraph with Virgin Mary Glykofilousa. It is Known that the original icon of Virgin Mary Glykofilousa was property of Victoria, wife of the senator Symeon, who, in order to save it threw it into the sea. The icon, floating upright on the waves, reached the arsanas of the Monastery of Philotheou, where it was received with great honour and rejoicing by the fathers of the Monastery. At the point on the shore where they placed the icon, holy water gushed out. The face of Virgin Mary Sweet Kissing (Glykofilousa) is always close to the face of her child. Christ is nesting inside her arms. His look turns to Virgin Mary while She turns her look to Jesus. Virgin Mary is Known by many different epithets that has been given to Her through the history of Orthodox Church.

Serigraph: Characteristics

Serigraph is a common technique in iconography and as a result is being taught and used in many iconography workshops including the ones at Mount Athos. At iconographies that are made with this particular technique monks are using traditional methods, which means that the iconographer creates the biggest part of the icon by hand and with less participation of technology. The artificial maturation of the iconographies is also handmade and gives at these works of art collectable value. These are exact copies of Byzantine art with an intense charm of old. This iconography is created with excellent materials in natural wood and the painted surface is covered with pure beeswax so it remains intact and with bright colours.
