Description

Virgin Mary Gorgoipikoos: What does this name of Virgin Mary mean?

The miraculous icon of Virgin Mary Gorgoipikoos is located in the Holy Monastery of Docheiari of Mount Athos since 1646. As it is mentioned in the monastery’s history, the picture “shines like a clear moon, as an excellent governor and a wise butler of the intergovernmental”. She protects the monks from every offense and insult, but also those who turn to her by faith, asking for her brokerage.

The picture is called Gorgoipikoos because Virgin Mary with her admirable works constantly proves she obeys and fasts to those who invoke her by faith and reverence. Her grace acts miraculously in Mount Athos, her Garden, and all over the world.

The icon of Panagia Gorgoripikoos

The icon is hand-finished and coated with gold leaf in the halo of Virgin Mary and Jesus as well as on the upper and lower side of the icon. The antique painting technique that has been used for its creation as well as the handmade details make the icon special and collective.
