Virgin Mary Hodegetria
The hagiographer monk from the Holy Monastery of Xenophontos on Mount Athos, Father Luke, has faithfully portrayed in the icon of Virgin Mary Hodegetria, the style of the Macedonian School.
In-between the golden background of the polished icon, the bust of Virgin Mary stands out, which is depicted in three-quarter turn to the left, while in the two upper sides, the archangels Gabriel and Michael are portrayed with reverent inclination.
Virgin Mary is holding Christ in her left hand while with the right one she is showing to the viewer her Son, who is the only way to Salvation. She is wearing a deep red maphorion with gold details. Key features of this unique work of Byzantine art are the balance of the composition, the expressive power of the form of Virgin Mary and the color harmony in the bright tones of the orange cloth of Christ.
