In well polished and gilded wood Virgin Mary is depicted in bust while holding Jesus in her arms. The infant Christ has a scroll in his left hand while blessing with the right one. The art of the picture as well as its technique, with the large almond-shaped eyes, the sharp nose, the long fingers and the individual components reveal a meticulous copying of old standards.
Virgin Mary is presented half body and frontal. The maphorion is dark in contrast to the bright clothes of Christ. The faces and bare parts are molded with light brown under paint.
The name comes from Virgin Mary Nikopoios and is a genuine copy of one of the most important works of Byzantine art that had been transferred from Istanbul to Venice. Tradition wants the prototype to reach Venice along with the spoils of the Fourth Crusade.
This creation is a collectible work of art and a unique object of worship. It was created by the hagiographer monks of the Xenophontos Monastery on Mount Athos and has been worked entirely by hand with egg tempera and 22Κ gold leaf. It is available with the approval and blessing of the monastery via the Mount Athos products exhibition.
