Description

Icon with the Last Supper on Naturally Aged Wood

A serigraph with the representation of the Last Supper, the final meal that Jesus shared with his Apostles in Jerusalem before his crucifixion. The four canonical Gospels all state that the Last Supper took place towards the end of the week, after Jesus’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem and that Jesus and his apostles shared a meal shortly before Jesus was crucified at the end of that week. During this meal Jesus predicts his betrayal by one of the apostles present and foretells that before the next morning, Peter will thrice deny knowing him. It is well known that the Last Supper is filled with symbolism. It was the Passover meal and Jesus is the sacrificial lamb. He uses bread to symbolize his body. The bread is broken and given to be shared, just as his body will be broken and his life given up for others.

Blessed Wood that Came Out of Paradise

At this particular icon the iconographer monk used as a base a piece of wood that has long history. The cracks at the surface of the wood confirms its age and the fact that for many years it was part of a door or a ceiling beam or even part of the furnishings in a cell at Mount Athos. When some of these objects had to be replaced the monks, with absolute respect, are keeping the old pieces of the wood and after the required maintenance they reuse them as a base for these beautiful icons. They are cutting and processing the wood with excellent techniques so they can use it later for their artworks. Renovation works are necessary at many cells so they can remain in good condition and monks can continue to live there.
