Description

Wood carved icon with Virgin Mary of Vladirim

The icon with Virgin Mary of Vladirim is one of the masterpieces of Byzantine hagiography. It follows the iconographic type of Virgin Mary Eleousa.

Virgin Mary of Vladirim is portrayed to hold Jesus as a child, gently resting her cheek on the little Christ’s cheek, who blesses and looks tenderly at His mother. The strong feelings and affection that connects the two forms are expressed uniquely by the way they are intertwined and by the unmistakable expression of the Virgin’s face. Indescribable grief and melancholy are erased in the look of the Virgin who knows the upcoming Passion of her son.

Virgin Mary of Vladirim: Why is it so called?

Virgin Mary of Vladirim, according to tradition, is the work of Evangelist Luke. Around 1131 BC the icon was transferred from Constantinople to Kiev as a wedding gift of the Ecumenical Patriarch John III of the Jerome Memorial to the great prince of Kiev Yuri Vladimirovich.

The icon, in 1155 AD, was moved to Vladimir and from there to Moscow in 1395. It was placed in the Kremlin and in front of it the Patriarchs were proclaimed and the Tsars were crowned.

In the 15th century, the inhabitants of the city of Vladimir demanded the return of the icon to their city. Instead of the original, they were given a copy of the icon, which was created by the great Russian hagiographer Andrei Rubuliev.

The icon of Virgin Mary of Vladirim is honored every year in Russia on June 3 (May 21 by the Church of Greece).
