Hagiography with Jesus Christ Pantocrator in antique painting technique

This is a unique icon of Byzantine art with a halo from pure silver 925o. Jesus Christ Pantocrator is one of the most common religious images of Orthodox Christianity. The icon depicts Christ with a somewhat melancholy and stern aspect, with the right hand raised in blessing while holding a closed gospel with his left one. Pantocrator usually translated as «almighty» or «all-powerful».

The icon of Christ Pantocrator appears in the dome of most Orthodox Churches. According to Orthodox tradition the highest point of the Church is reserved for Jesus Christ. His Mother and all the other saints, angels and prophets are depicted on the walls immediately below Pantocrator. The iconographic type of Christ Pantocrator, the «all-powerful», is very frequent in later Byzantine art.

Hagiography in antique painting technique – Style

This icon comes straight from the Byzantine workshop of Father Pefkis, a graduate of the Athonite Ecclesiastical Academy. He was taught the art of byzantine iconography by monk – professor, Ioannis Branos, one of the most distinguished and skilled connoisseurs of the Byzantine Iconography.

This unique handmade icon in antique painting technique has been created on natural wood, with absolute dedication to the traditional methods and by using colors processed mainly with egg and other traditional materials. The painted surface is covered with pure beeswax to keep the colours bright as new.

The icon bears the signature of father Pefkis and a seal of authenticity. At his workshop he is creating icons mostly of the Byzantine and post-Byzantine period always with the style of the macedonian school. The byzantine hagiography workshop of Father Pefkis is responsible for the creation of Byzantine icons since 1980.
