Lithography with Virgin Mary The Life – Giving Spring

A lithography with the representation Virgin Mary as The Life-Giving Spring or Life-Giving Font of the Mother of God. This is a feast day in the Greek Orthodox Church that is associated with a historic church just west of Constantinople in Valoukli, as well as an icon of Virgin Mary. The feast day of the Life-Giving Spring is commemorated on Bright Friday of each year (the Friday following Pascha), being the only feast day which may be celebrated during Bright Week, while the commemoration of the Life-Giving Spring Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos is observed on April 4.

Lithography: Characteristics

This particular icon is created with the technique of lithography. The monk who created this piece of artwork has studied at the workshops of iconography at Mount Athos where he learned the technique of lithography and the process of artificial maturation by hand that applied at this icon with the representation of Saint Jacob. These techniques gives this icon collectable value. The technique of lithography in iconography is a printing technique which was invented in  1798 and relies on the fact that water and oil never mix.
